For this case, we received a request from a port terminal asking if we could help to make the replacement of an encoder in a hoist crane go more smoothly. A setup devised by a crane manufacturer posed some difficulties in practice when it came to replacing the encoder. An encoder must be properly aligned; otherwise, it would quickly malfunction, leading to crane downtime. Replacing the encoder in this crane was a challenging task, sometimes taking up to 1 or 2 days. During this time, the crane would be out of operation, incurring significant costs.
Replacing the encoder within a few minutes
Our client approached us seeking a solution to this issue. By carefully examining the crane’s structure, our engineer proposed replacing the existing encoder model with a magnetic encoder. This magnetic encoder provides the same signal as the current one, but in case of a problem, it’s easier to replace since only the sensor head needs to be replaced. Together with our client, we performed the initial conversion, and now, replacing the encoder can be done within a few minutes instead of 1 to 2 days!
