Incremental encoders generate information about position, angle, and number of rotations. Industrial incremental encoders provide precise position and speed feedback for many demanding applications. The resolution is defined by the number of pulses or stripes per rotation that the encoder sends to the controller for each rotation. The current position can be determined by the controller by counting these pulses. When turning on the machine, a reference motion may be necessary.

Incremental encoder

An incremental encoder is a type of rotary encoder that is often used in positioning and motor speed feedback applications. It is used to convert angular motion or position of a shaft into an analog or digital code to identify position or motion. Incremental encoders provide excellent speed and distance feedback and are both simple and inexpensive because there are few sensors involved. However, since an encoder incremental only provides change information, it requires a reference device to calculate motion.

How does an incremental encoder work?

In summary, an incremental encoder provides pulses as output in one rotation. It typically consists of an assembly of a spindle, PCB, and cover. The pulses can be in the form of a single line (A channel) or two lines of pulses (A and B channels) that are offset in order to determine rotation. Optionally, an index (Z) channel and/or commutation (U, V, W) channels can be provided.

Application of an incremental encoder

Incremental encoders are used in a variety of applications, ranging from heavy-duty industrial applications to light-duty/servo-controlled environments. In heavy-duty settings, such as pulp, paper, steel, and wood mills these encoders are designed to withstand contaminants, moisture, higher temperatures, shock, and vibration.

Industrial Duty applications

Industrial duty applications, like those in food and beverage, textile, and factory automation plants, require standard IP ratings, moderate shock and vibration, and temperature specifications. Finally, Light Duty/Servo applications, such as robotics, electronics, and semiconductors require precise accuracy and temperature control.
